Spider Gates

Category: Spotlight 31 October 2007

For Halloween a few weeks back, we sent a Main South Speaks brigade to see if we could prove or disprove any of the myths surrounding Friend’s Cemetery (aka Spider Gates).

Here are the three big rumors we’ve heard:
1) Spider Gates is the gateway to hell.
2) If you’re quiet you can heard voices and howls in the forest.
3) There is an “alter” in the center where Satanists perform rituals.

Read on to see what we found:

1) Spider Gates is the gateway to Hell.

Thankfully none of us ended our trip to the cemetery stuck in Hell or anywhere between here and there.

In fact, what we found was a rather pleasant place to go for a walk on a Fall afternoon.

2) If you’re quiet you can heard voices and howls in the forest.

The only sounds we heard were the occasional frog croaks (which were kind of creepy since we were trying our best to hear ghosts whispering to us).

3) There is an “alter” in the center where Satanists perform rituals.
The “alter” is just a slightly raised area in the middle of the cemetery. It was a little creepy at first because there were no headstones, but after a little research we found out that’s because there used to be a small meeting house for Quakers there, not Satanists.

All in all, Friends Cemetery is a pretty nice place to visit. Since it is still a public cemetery, people are welcome to visit during the day time to go for hikes or check out some really old headstones.

In our opinion, there is nothing there to be afraid of.
